Adelphi University to Host “Urban Structures” Art Exhibition
Garden City, NY
August 26, 2009

Adelphi University is pleased to present the art exhibition “Urban Structures,” work inspired by the landscape and modern sprawl of the city. Painters and sculptors depict the visual chaos and beauty of the cityscape, and will have their work on display at the Ruth S. Harley University Center Gallery, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY, from Tuesday, November 3 to Tuesday, November 24, 2009. A free reception will be held on Tuesday, November 10, 2009, at 6:00 p.m.
The featured artists explore the sharp edge of the urban world and its visual poetry as they have personally experienced it, and in some cases, reinvented it. Painter Derek Buckner describes a feeling of tension with his perspectives on construction and urban expansion. Diana Horowitz, however, utilizes a careful yet natural
plein air (painting outdoors) approach to portraying the cityscapes of New York. Nicholas Evans-Cato masterfully shows the city’s sweeping world through his use of oil paint. A direct painting technique is employed by Elizabeth O’Reilly for her on-site depictions of Brooklyn’s industrial worlds. Adelphi Associate Professor Kellyann Monaghan contributes her skills with an improvisational and quirky nighttime portrait of the city. Zaneta Zubkova paints her view of apartment buildings in a minimalist fashion using simple blocks of color. Through paint and collage, Cheryl Molnar portrays the ever-changing urban world in images both real and imagined. Sculptor and Adelphi Adjunct Professor Anti Liu creates ceramic structures based on his Taiwanese childhood memories of bunkers, staircases, and imposing walls. In contrast, Jeremy Nadel’s miniature sculptures reveal a more whimsical side of the city.
Each artist brings to light a unique facet of urbanization, whether through truthful vision, or reinvention and playful whimsy. These artists create an infinite visual world using the city’s urban grit as a tool to express its surprising beauty, and invite the public to share in this world by attending the exhibition and reception.
The Ruth S. Harley University Center Gallery is open Sunday through Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. To learn more about “Urban Structures,” contact exhibition curator and Associate Professor Kellyann Monaghan at (516) 877-4466, or at
