Adelphi University Named a Military Friendly School for 2010
Garden City, NY
September 1, 2009

Adelphi University has been named a Military Friendly School for 2010 by
G.I. Jobs magazine. The list recognizes only the top 15 percent of colleges, universities, and trade schools which are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students. To be honored as a Military Friendly School, certain criteria had to be met, including efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students, results in recruiting military and veteran students and academic accreditations. The Military Friendly Schools list was compiled through exhaustive research starting last May during which
G.I. Jobs polled more than 7,000 schools nationwide.
With the recent passage of the Post-9/11 GI Bill and launch of the Yellow Ribbon Program, qualified veterans have an opportunity to advance their college education and pay little to no tuition if they chose to attend Adelphi. The University has agreed to match the Veterans Administration’s contribution of 50 percent of tuition costs and the new G.I. Bill provides additional money toward books and room and board. Veterans are also eligible for the same merit and other traditional scholarships as if they were nonmilitary students. Moreover, veterans could transfer enrollment for the Yellow Ribbon Program funds to a dependent if they already have earned a degree, or if the veteran is deceased or incapacitated to attend. The University will accept prior learning credits for some of the veterans’ military training.
University College, the adult undergraduate degree program founded more than 35 years ago, is coordinating Adelphi’s Yellow Ribbon Program participation. Adelphi is committed to offering academic and support programs, valuable resources, and transitional services designed to meet the unique needs of currently enlisted military personnel and military veterans. Adelphi has welcomed veterans to campus for decades. After the end of World War II, the University opened its doors to many veterans seeking to further their education under the G.I. Bill. In addition, Adelphi President Robert A. Scott, a veteran, worked with elected officials, including former New York State Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on developing the newest G.I. Bill.
