James McGowan names Adelphi's Executive Director of Off-Campus Administration

Adelphi University is proud to announce that James McGowan has been named executive director of off-campus administration. He has been an accomplished administrator who has helped increase resources, student services, technological backup, and personnel in support of Adelphi’s off-campus academic programs. He has also been providing leadership and oversight of all off-campus programs, including the Manhattan Center, the Hauppauge Education and Conference Center, and the Adelphi University Hudson Valley Center.
As former associate provost for off-campus programs, Mr. McGowan has more than twenty years of experience in coordination and administration of off-campus programs, including monitoring of accounts receivables, financial aid, registration, academic advising, admissions, bursar, and enrollment management. He has acquired more than thirteen years’ worth of experience in academic advising, career counseling, financial aid counseling, and personal counseling of college students. Additionally, Mr. McGowan has served as adjunct professor in the Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies’ Graduate Master’s Degree in Psychology program, and still teaches courses in Psychopathology of Children and Advanced Theories of Psychopathology. He has also been on the board of several Adelphi committees, such as the Middle States Accreditation Committee, Academic Calendar Committee, and Assessment Committee.
Prior to his positions at Adelphi, Mr. McGowan held several roles at Mercy College, as director of Westchester sites, manager of operational services for extension centers, assistant to the dean, and adjunct instructor, among others. He also worked for the United States Social Security Administration as an equal employment opportunity commission counselor and as benefit authorizer.
Other professional roles Mr. McGowan has held include membership on the board of trustees of the Long Island Works Coalition, board of directors of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, board of directors of the MacArthur Business Alliance, co-chair of the Sachem School Business Alliance, as well as member of the Suffolk County Psychological Association and the New York State Association of School Psychologists.
Mr. McGowan holds two master’s degrees: one in school psychology from Long Island University, Westchester, and one in applied psychology, from Long Island University, Brooklyn. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the Polytechnic Institute in Brooklyn, NY.
