Adelphi University to Host an Exhibition of Artwork by Donald T. Hendricks

Adelphi University is pleased to host an exhibition featuring the paintings and paper castings by the late artist, Donald T. Hendricks, through Thursday, September 24, 2009, in the Ruth S. Harley University Center Gallery and the Fine Arts Exhibition Hall in the Adele and Herbert J. Klapper Center for Fine Arts, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The exhibition is curated by MaryEllen Hackett ’10, a B.F.A student in the Department of Art and Art History. A free reception will take place on Thursday, September 10, 2009, at 6:00 p.m. in the Adele and Herbert J. Klapper Center for Fine Arts.
Mr. Hendricks had his work showcased internationally at the Museum of the City of Langano, Switzerland, the Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona, Spain, Galleria Trini in Mexico, and the Galleria Ivan Spence in Ibiza, Spain, among others. His style incorporates a number of mixed media, including metal work to create a unique narrative of expression.
Outside of art, Mr. Hendricks enjoyed varied careers including as a minister, a commercial airline pilot, an interior designer, a basset hound breeder, owner of an antique store, and a commodore of the Oak Beach Yacht Club. He also served on the United States Air Force from 1941 to 1942 and was a member of the Panda Bear Squadron of the Flying Tigers that flew out of Kunming, China.
The recipient of numerous awards, Mr. Hendricks won first prize for painting from the Heckscher Museum and second prize for sculpture at the St. John’s University Juried Exhibition. From 1938 to 1939, he studied at the Grand Central School of Art in New York City, as well as Yale and Hofstra Universities. He was a member of Artists Equity National, the Foundation for the Community of Artists, and the National Sculpture Society before his passing in 2004.
The Ruth S. Harley University Center Gallery is open Sunday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and the Fine Arts Exhibition Hall is open Sunday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. For more information about this and other upcoming art exhibitions, please visit
