Veterans' Breakfast Highlights Adelphi's Services for its Military Community
---
Garden City, NY
September 28, 2009

---
Adelphi University hosted a welcome breakfast for all Adelphi students who are veterans or are currently enlisted, faculty, staff, and alumni who served in the military, as well as their family members on September 16, 2009 in Alumni House. The event featured a brief orientation to programs and services available on campus for military students and their families. It offered participants the chance to network with their fellow Adelphi veteran students, the University’s financial aid and admissions staff, and Long Island veterans’ service agencies. The informal discussion also showcased Adelphi’s implementation of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Yellow Ribbon G.I. Education Enhancement Program.

“We have many resources at Adelphi, but we never coalesced. This [Adelphi’s Yellow Ribbon Program] has made us do that,” Executive Director of Adelphi’s University College Shawn O’Riley said. “We have a lot of veterans and we want to create a warm, welcoming environment for them.”

Adelphi offers several specialized policies and procedures for veterans and currently enlisted students and provides a range of services to students once they enroll. These services include waived application fees, pre-enrollment advising, late admissions, no academic penalty for early withdrawal, as well as a supportive environment that provides veterans with opportunities for growth and success.

During the event, representatives of Adelphi’s Registrar’s Office, Student Counseling Center, Admissions Office, and Student Financial Services emphasized the importance of veterans discussing their options to pay and the benefit of little to no tuition if they enroll in the University. Affiliates of several Long Island veterans’ service agencies including the North Shore L.I.J. Florence and Robert A. Rosen Family Wellness Center, the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and the Nassau County Veterans Service Agency, highlighted some of the services they provide to veterans and their families.

Adelphi University has a long, rich tradition of serving veteran and enlisted military students. The Post 9/11 G.I. Bill represents the largest expansion of G.I. education benefits since the original G.I. Bill began after World War II. The Yellow Ribbon Program is a part of this new legislation, which allows private universities to cover additional tuition costs for qualified veterans.
