Adelphi University to Co-Host Burmese Artist Chaw Ei Tein on March 4, 2010

Adelphi University is pleased to welcome Chaw Ei Thein as she offers an in-depth look at artists’ roles in social and political issues. The event, “Politics and the Burmese Artist,” is part of the Human Rights Speaker Series co-hosted by the Levermore Global Scholars Program and freeDimensional, a network that supports art spaces centered on activism and strengthening community engagement. The Mantle, which promotes social and political involvement among citizens, is also collaborating. The event will take place on Thursday, March 4, 2010, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on the second floor of the Adelphi University Manhattan Center, 75 Varick Street, New York, NY, and is free and open to the public.
Ms. Ei Thein focuses her art on human rights, with her most recent work, “Bed,” representing her own mixed emotions surrounding her homeland, Burma. Her work will be on display in the “Transformed Conversations” exhibit with fellow artist Brad Darcy at the Soapbox Gallery in Brooklyn, NY, from Friday, February 19 to Thursday, March 18, 2010. Her sculptures in this exhibit are dedicated to all who have suffered political repression and human rights abuses.
As the co-founder and director of the Sunflower Art Gallery in Yangon, Myanmar, Ms. Ei Thein organizes exhibitions and fairs for children and psychiatric patients in Myanmar and Cambodia. She was recently awarded the Elizabeth J. McCormack and Jerome I. Aron Fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council (ACC), and was an artist-in-residence with the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) in 2009. She has also spoken at a number of universities, including School of the Art Institute Chicago (SAIC), Brown University, and the Open Society Institute (OSI) in New York, among others. She received an LL.B. from Rangoon University, Burma in 1994.
freeDimensional (fD) is an organization that advances social justice by hosting activists in art spaces and using cultural resources to strengthen their work. Furthermore, fD is made up of art spaces in more than 60 countries with regional hubs in New York City, Cairo, Sao Paulo, Berlin and Pondicherry. Members provide safe haven for oppressed culture workers in their residency apartments, offer meeting rooms to community members who bring important local issues to light, and introduce new ideas to the public through bold exhibitions and inclusive educational programs. In these ways, fD supports the freedom of thought and expression globally.
