Adelphi University is pleased to host Michael W. Apple, the John Bascom Professor of Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Policy Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as he presents “Markets, Standards, and Inequality in Education” for The Robert and Augusta Finkelstein Memorial Lecture. The event will take place on Wednesday, October 20, 2010, at 6:30 p.m. in the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center (AU PAC), Concert Hall, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Apple is one of the world’s most prominent proponents for the democratization of educational policy, research, and practice. Alongside his post at the University of Wisconsin, he is also the Professor of Educational Policy Studies at the University of London Institute of Education, and the World Scholar and Distinguished Professor of Educational Policy Studies at East China Normal University in Shanghai. Earlier in his career, he was an elementary and secondary school teacher and the president of a teachers’ union. He has worked with various government and non-government organizations in countries around the globe to promote educational reform.

He is the author of numerous books on education; including Ideology and Curriculum and Official Knowledge, which were selected as two of the most significant books on education in the 20th Century, and Educating the “Right” Way: Markets, Standards, God, and Inequality, named the 2006 American Educational Research Association (AERA) Book of the Year. His work has been widely translated and published worldwide.

In addition, he is the recipient of an AERA Lifetime Achievement Award, a Medal for Outstanding Academic Achievement from the University of California at Los Angeles, and a number of honorary degrees from universities throughout the world.

The Robert and Augusta Finkelstein Memorial Lecture was established in 1981 by Augusta Finkelstein in honor of her husband, the late Robert Finkelstein, a noted industrialist and staunch supporter of public education. Following Mrs. Finkelstein’s death, the lecture was renamed for her as well, and continues to be generously supported by the Finkelstein family. Mrs. Finkelstein's goal was “to provide a series of lectures by well-known persons recognized for their commitment to the elementary and secondary public school system.”
