Adelphi Mourns the Loss of Dean Emerita Ruth S. Harley '24, '50 (Hon.)

Ruth S. Harley
Ruth S. Harley Biography
Ruth Stratton Harley was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 21, 1902. She grew up in Flatbush, NY, where she lived for 40 years before moving to Garden City, NY. She attended P.S. 139 and graduated from Erasmus Hall high School in 1920.

Ruth enrolled at Adelphi in 1920 when the College was still an all-women's campus and located in Brooklyn, near what is today the Pratt Institute. Ruth's commitment to Adelphi began in her undergraduate years. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta, played on the women's basketball team, was treasurer and the president of the Student Government Association, the art editor of the student yearbook, The Oracle, summer session librarian at the College, and captain for the College's endowment fund campaign.

Ruth graduated from Adelphi in 1924, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Latin and a minor in history. Upon graduation, she began teaching Latin at Adelphi Academy as well as working for the Endowment Fund Office. She worked her way up to become assistant registrar and subsequently moved up to the position of assistant to the dean of women for the next eight years.

In 1932, Ruth was appointed registrar, a position she held for the next ten years. Simultaneously, she pursued a master's degree in personnel administration at New York University. In 1942, Ruth became dean of women, a position she held until her retirement in 1970, and in 1950 she was awarded an honorary doctorate from Adelphi in recognition of her significant contributions and continuing service to the University. Upon her retirement, she was named dean emerita. Two years later, the Ruth S. Harley University Center was dedicated in her honor.

Even in retirement, Ruth continued her active involvement with Adelphi, serving on the Alumni Association Steering Committee, the President's Advisory Council, and the Friends of Adelphi University Library. Ruth also belonged to such organizations as the American Association of University Women, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Tau Alpha, the Adelphi Panther Club, Lantern, and numerous additional community clubs and organizations including: Zonta International, the Silversmithing Committee of the Community Club of Garden City, and the Church in the Garden of Garden City.
