Overview
Led by Adelphi University Associate Professor Mariano Torras, the 36-page study “Strengthening Long Island: The Economic Contributions of Immigrants to Nassau and Suffolk Counties” provides compelling and rich statistical evidence on the critical economic influence of the immigrant population on Long Island and details their contributions to the workforce. The study was made possible through funding from the Hagedorn Foundation, and in partnership with Long Island WINS and Adelphi’s Center for Social Innovation.
About the Author
Mariano Torras, Ph.D., is associate professor of economics at Adelphi University and Fellow at the Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame. In 2007, he co-authored the report, “The Economic Impact of the Hispanic Population on Long Island, New York.” He has published numerous articles and book reviews in such scholarly journals as World Development, Social Science Quarterly, Ecological Economics, and Problemas del Desarrollo, and has also authored a book on economic development in Brazil. Dr. Torras was recipient in 2004 of the Maestro Jesús Silva Herzog award, granted by UNAM in Mexico City.
