Brooks Frederick, Oil Paintings

Brooks Frederick, Oil Paintings

Brooks Frederick has worked as a professional artist for 15 years and been a faculty member in the Adelphi art department for 9 years. His artwork can be found in collections worldwide. Classically trained as a figurative painter and sculptor in NYC, Frederick uses his traditional skills to address contemporary issues like environmental preservation, race and class. Brooks maintains studio and teaching practices in NYC and his hometown near New Orleans. He is actively engaged in community building and environmental artistic movements in both locations.

Oil Paintings features Frederick’s series of paintings executed in oil and tar recovered from the Gulf Coast after the 2010 oil spill. Featured in the exhibition are portraits of B.P. corporate executives, fishing industry workers, and the artist’s family and friends from Louisiana who are affected by the spill. The artist allows us to encounter the material that washed ashore while inviting us to ask questions about the sustainability of our current practices.

Reception: September 17, 5-7pm

Gallery Talk: September 24, PAC 216 at 6:30pm
