This holiday season, the Adelphi community celebrates giving in all its forms. Student organizations across campus remember those less fortunate, and the call to support food and clothing drives has gone out to students, families and friends.
In the fall semester, Adelphi clubs and organizations completed a total of 2,871 hours of community service. The Think Pink Campaign in October raised more than $13,000 for the Adelphi NY State Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program. Sleepout for the Soldiers drew 83 students, who gathered $1,097 for the Military Heroes Foundation as well as birthday cards and 20 pounds of care package supplies for members of the armed forces. More locally, a PB&J-a-thon organized by CALIBER and Bridges to Adelphi made more than 300 sandwiches for the INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) in Hempstead.
Giving back also unites alumni and students throughout the year. More than 40 alumni serve as mentors, providing one-to-one guidance and advice to students in all majors. Last year, 109 alumni volunteered their time to help host alumni events, reach out to friends and serve as advisers to University leadership.
Each year, thousands of alumni make their gift to the Annual Fund. In fact, for the past three years, undergraduate participation in giving has risen by one percent each year. Those dollars, in gifts of all sizes, help fund scholarships and bring new opportunities and events to campus.
This December, we invite you to join us in celebrating a season of giving. More highlights will be covered in this month’s issue of eNews from AU.
Alumni who are eligible may also make a gift through an IRA Rollover, which counts toward your required minimum deduction and reduces your tax burden for 2013.
