Timely and Topical: November Lectures Promise to Enlighten
This month, Adelphi hosts lectures by Nobel Prize-winning biologist, Dr. Paul Nurse and General Counsel of the Department of Defense and former Adelphi Trustee Jeh Charles Johnson.

Knighted in 1999 for his outstanding research in cytology, Dr. Nurse primarily focuses his work on cell division and cell shape. He has identified a key regulator molecule that functions in cellular reproduction, with vast implications for cancer research. He will deliver the annual Dakin Memorial Lecture on Wednesday, November 18, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. in Adelphi’s Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom in the Ruth S. Harley University Center.

Mr. Johnson began his career in public service as an assistant United States attorney in the Southern District of New York, where he prosecuted public corruption cases. Now general counsel of the Department of Defense, he is the department's chief legal officer and advises the secretary of defense on military operations, international affairs, intelligence, civilian and military personnel matters and health policy, among others. Mr. Johnson will deliver the lecture, "From Defense Counsel to Defense Department: A Lawyer's Journey," at Adelphi University on Tuesday, November 17, 2009, at 4:30 p.m. in Adelphi University's Performing Arts Center (AU PAC) Concert Hall.

Robert McMillan '57 Exhibit Offers Historical Perspective of the Panama Canal
Coincidental with the tenth year from the transfer of the Canal to Panama per the Torrijos-Carter Treaty, Adelphi University will showcase "Global Passage: Selections from the Robert R. McMillan Panama Canal Collection," from Wednesday, December 2, 2009 to Sunday, January 10, 2010 in the Ruth S. Harley University Center Gallery. The collection offers a historical perspective of Panama, the Panama Canal, and the Panama Canal Commission through documents, books, and other items. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, December 3, 2009 in the Ruth S. Harley University Center from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., to be followed by a brief presentation by Robert R. McMillan '57. The event is free and open to the public.

October Lineup: Five Lectures in Three Weeks
This month, Adelphi University hosts no fewer than five lecturers on a wide variety of topics. Don't miss their informative and engaging views of urban school improvement, science and society, and the Middle East peace process. Author Josh Swiller will discuss his memoir, The Unheard: A Memoir of Deafness and Africa, and Robert G. Darling '81 will reveal his experiences as White House physician during the Bill Clinton presidency.

Are You Ready to Talk the Talk?
To aid alumni, current students, and their guests in the ever-daunting job search, the Office of Alumni Relations will host a Job Boot Camp on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. in the Center for Recreation and Sport's Campbell Lounge, as part of its Backpack to Briefcase series. John Capua '76, founder and head trainer of Talk the Talk Boot Camp, will lead the event and whip participants into prime job-hunting shape.

Midnight Madness Strikes Again
To kick off the fall basketball season, Adelphi Athletics will host Midnight Madness on Friday, October 16, 2009 in the Center for Recreation and Sport. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. Tickets, which are $5.00, will only be sold in advance and will be available for purchase from AU PAC the week of the event.
