The State of Adelphi in 2006 I invite you to read my 2006 State of the University Address, delivered to faculty, alumni, students, and friends of Adelphi on September 6, 2006. In it, I lay out our goals for the coming year, and discuss Adelphi's long history in addressing societal needs, particularly those in K-12 education.

Hillary Rutter Named Health Care Hero October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and fittingly Hillary Rutter, director of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program, has been recognized with the North Fork Bank Health Care Hero Award for her organization's outstanding work. The Breast Cancer Hotline is just one of Adelphi's many community outreach initiatives.

Adelphi Receives over $600,000 from the Estate of Ruth S. Harley '24, '50 (Hon.) Adelphi University recently received a bequest of $605,000 from the estate of Ruth S. Harley '24, '50 (Hon.), dean emerita and alumna extraordinaire, who passed away in 2005. The gift will add to the endowed scholarship in Dean Harley's name, provide unrestricted support to the University, and support to the Friends of the Adelphi University Library.

18th Annual Golf Classic a Record-Breaking Success
More than 220 golfers teed off for a good cause at the 18th Annual Adelphi University Golf Classic on September 25, 2006, held at Cherry Valley Club in Garden City, NY. The outing, which honored Michael J. Driscoll M.B.A. '89, netted a record-breaking $165,000 to support student athletic scholarships. Many thanks to all who lent their support.

Heard on Campus U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue M.B.A. '65 addressed the current business climate and the role of business in society in his September 15, 2006 campus talk, part of the Hagedorn Lecture on Corporate Social Responsibility.

Adelphi celebrates the naming of the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education with its first Ammon Symposium on "The Future of Schools, Schooling, and Community Partnerships" on Monday, October 16, 2006 at 4:00 PM. Dr. Marilyn Cochran-Smith, the John E. Cawthorne Millennium Professor of Teacher Education at Boston College, will deliver the keynote address. Other speakers include New York Commissioner of Education Richard P. Mills, Carol A. Ammon M.B.A. '79, the Honorable Roger Tilles, and New York State Teacher of the Year Marguerite Izzo M.S. '84.

The Adelphi Performing Arts Department presents Urinetown on November 7-12, 2006. With Olmsted Theatre closed until 2008 due to construction, the musical will be performed off-campus at the Herricks Community Center.

Adelphi's fall music series is not to be missed. Performances include Trio Solisti at 7:30 PM on October 11, 2006, the Adelphi University Symphony Orchestra at 8:00 PM on October 27, 2006, and a Prestige Concert with pianist Golda Vainberg-Tatz at 8:00 PM on November 15, 2006.

Men's Basketball First in Scoring Defense and Field Goal Percentage Defense For the second consecutive year, the men's basketball team finished the 2005-2006 basketball season as the top ranked team in NCAA Division II in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense. The team opens its 2006-2007 season on November 15, playing Bentley College at 7:00 PM in Woodruff Hall.

Allyson Murphy '07 Recognized by NCAA for Lacrosse Goalkeeping Women's lacrosse goalkeeper Allyson Murphy '07 was recognized as the NCAA Division II Leader in goals against average. She was previously named to the 2006 NCAA All-Tournament Team and was honored as the C. Markland Kelly Goalie of the Year by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Association.

Carlyshia Hurdle '06 is the First Alumna to Play Professional Basketball Former Adelphi women's basketball player Carlyshia Hurdle '06 has signed a one-year contract to play with the Olivais-Coimbra team in Portugal, making her the University's first alumna to compete in professional basketball.

Dennis Lind '88 Named Panther Club President
Dennis Lind '88 has assumed his responsibilities as president of the Adelphi University Panther Club, which raises money to support Adelphi athletics. Mr. Lind was previously vice president of the Panther Club. He replaces Steven Wirth '70, president from 1992-2006, who will chair the newly formed Athletic Director Advisory Board.

Homecoming Weekend 2006 Scores of Adelphi alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends flocked to the Garden City campus September 29 through October 1, 2006 to celebrate Homecoming Weekend 2006. The weekend included an AU Pep Rally, men's and women's soccer matches, an Alumni Retro Reunion held at the Garden City Hotel, and other events and celebrations.
