Dr. Lynne Elkin
Watson's the Double Helix
Adelphi University welcomed Dr. Lynne Elkin, an expert in biological sciences and recognized authority on the life and work of Dr. Rosalind Franklin, who is best known for her research that led to the understanding of the structure of DNA. Dr. Elkin delivered the Jerry March Memorial Lecture, "Watson's the Double Helix: Fact Versus the Fictional Rosalind Franklin."

Ngugi wa Thiong'o
"Decolonizing the Mind"
Ngugi wa Thiong'o, currently Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature and Director of the International Center for Writing and Translation at the University of California, Irvine, was born in Kenya, in 1938 into a large peasant family. He was educated at Kamandura, Manguu and Kinyogori primary schools; Alliance High School, all in Kenya; Makerere University College (then a campus of London University), Kampala, Uganda; and the University of Leeds, Britain. He is recipient of seven Honorary Doctorates viz D Litt (Albright); PhD (Roskilde); D Litt (Leeds); D Litt &Ph D (Walter Sisulu University); PhD (Carlstate); D Litt (Dillard) and D Litt (Auckland University). He is also Honorary Member of American Academy of Letters. A many-sided intellectual, he is novelist, essayist, playwright, journalist, editor, academic and social activist.

Women's History as a Tool for Social Change
Gerda Lerner, who fled Nazi persecution at age 18, became a pioneer in the field of women's history, and founder of the first women's studies program in the U.S. at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She chronicled her experiences as a refugee and political activist in Fireweed: A Political Autobiography.
High school faculty, students and the public were invited to Gerda Lerner's presentation at Adelphi University's University Center Ballroom.

Alice Hoffman Young Writers Retreat
This past summer the Adelphi University Ruth S. Ammon School of Education, in partnership with best-selling author and Adelphi graduate, Alice Hoffman '73, offered the Adelphi University Alice Hoffman Young Writers Retreat. This annual program is an intensive writing workshop where high school students and their teachers can experience the power of arts-based learning.
The four-day summer retreat on Adelphi's main campus in Garden City, New York, featured creative writing workshops with Adelphi faculty, accomplished writers and artists, and English education graduate students. All admitted students received a full program scholarship.

Black History Month Celebration
The Fifth Annual Black History Month Celebration took place on Saturday, February 24, in the University Center. This was the most successful event to date, bringing back over 200 students, alumni, staff and friends to celebrate athletes of color at Adelphi.
The Multicultural Alumni Chapter honored Gregory Johnson and Dr. N. Gerry House was the keynote speaker. The Salvation Army of Hempstead, New York and its Double Dutch team peformed. The raffle prizes raised $412, with all proceeds going to the Salvation Army.
As part of the program, a 10-minute video montage was produced by Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator, Denee Rivera, featuring interviews with Adelphi student-athletes of color.

Kaye, chief judge of the State of New York, Howard Dodson, chief of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of The New York Public Library, and Thomas Dixon Lovely, retired chairman and CEO of Fidelity Bank of New York and former Adelphi University Trustee.
