Akropolis Reed Quintet: Pulse

Event, Campus Event, Performing Arts Series, Garden City Event, Music, Guest Artist, Spirit Weekend

Akropolis explores rhythm and minimalism through its unique and colorful repertoire of eclectic contemporary works. Inspired by jazz, techno, heavy metal and “avant-pop”, the music reflects a present-day emphasis on pulse as a binding agent for all types of music. The concert will wind through various derivations of minimalism, but also Gershwin’s early 20th century jazz-inspired Three Preludes and John Leszczynski’s Variations in the Reeds, a modern day species counterpoint. The program also includes two of Akropolis’ first commissions by University of Michigan alumni Asaf Peres and Garrett Schumann, Fun Fun Fun Fun and High Speed Reed. Also featured are two additional commissions by the great Serbian minimalist composer, Vladimir Tosic, and California-based film composer, Jason Turbin. The program closes, perhaps appropriately, with Dutch “avant-pop” composer Jacob TV’s Jesus is Coming for reed quintet and ghettoblaster, a work synthesizing real-world samples of an angry New York City street evangelist and a Salvation Army choir, with TV’s own undefinable compositional style somewhere between postminimalism and romanticism. To each work, Akropolis brings its effervescent and acclaimed control of the reed quintet as a colorful and dynamic voice for contemporary composers.

GERSHWIN  Three Preludes
ASAF PERES  Fun Fun Fun Fun
JOHN LESZCZYNSKI  Variations in the Reeds
