Cultural Competence in the Workplace


We will discuss the evolution and meaning of the concept called cultural competence and how and why it is important in the workplace.

This event is part of Adelphi’s Leadership Certificate Program.

About the Speaker

Renaire Frierson is a product of Freeport (Freeport, NY) Public Schools. She attended Hofstra University and received a B.B.A. in International Business and Spanish. Frierson earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) from Boston University School of Law and is admitted to practice in New York State Courts, Federal Courts and the United States Supreme Court. Frierson is a NYS Office of Court Administration trained mediator and she also has a professional certificate in Diversity Management from the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations. Frierson began her professional career at the New York County (Manhattan) District Attorney’s Office, New York, NY as an Assistant District Attorney. There she prosecuted misdemeanors and felonies from intake to trial and post-trial.

Subsequently, Frierson taught legal writing at Hofstra University School of Law. Thereafter, Frierson served as Deputy Village Attorney for the Incorporated Village of Freeport. A little later, she was elected Trustee/Deputy Mayor (appointed) for three consecutive four-year terms.

Frierson was Counsel, Acting Executive Director and Executive Director for the Nassau County Commission on Human Rights. The Commission is Nassau County’s law enforcement agency for discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodations. In that role Frierson supervised an investigative staff, conducted fact-finding hearings, rendered determinations and negotiated alternative dispute resolutions. Frierson has drafted local laws and EEO policies.

Frierson worked for Gorman and Rankin, P.C., “of counsel” where she represented employers and employers’ insurance carriers before the NYS Workers’ Compensation Board. Frierson has lectured at Hofstra University’s School of Continuing Education and is an adjunct professor of Legal Studies at Nassau Community College. Her teaching career has spanned more than twenty years and she planned and delivered EEO, anti-discrimination, anti-harassment, diversity and inclusion training for more than a decade.

Frierson has worked with Long Island schools, local governments, administrative agencies, community organizations, NUMC, Nassau County Bar Association, Nassau County Sheriff’s Department, Nassau Community College, the Town of Hempstead and students of every age and from various backgrounds.

Frierson is currently the Title IX Coordinator/ Director, Equity and Compliance for Adelphi University, Garden City, NY

Its goal is to offer Adelphi undergraduate and graduate students opportunities to develop leadership and professional skills. Participants are able to attend workshops on a wide variety of topics during the course of the year. 


Requirements for Students

To participate in the Leadership Certificate Program, you must RSVP for a minimum of six events. Each student must complete the workshops within the academic year. Events are added throughout the year.
