Genetics and Breast Cancer

On Tuesday, May 22, 2018, the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is presenting a forum on the topic of Genetics and Breast Cancer at Adelphi University’s Alumni House in Garden City from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.

The world of genetic counseling is rapidly changing. In this forum Sharona Cohen the Genetic Counselor in the Cancer Genetics Program at Northwell Health will discuss the history of genetics and it’s impact on breast cancer. This forum will provide the most up-to-date information on genetic counseling. Ms. Cohen will discuss the importance of speaking with a genetic counselor following the result of genetic testing.

Sharona Cohen, M.S., CGC,
Certified Genetic Counselor,
Director, Cancer Genetic Program at Northwell Health

Sharona Cohen is a board-certified genetic counselor who has run the Cancer Genetics Program since 2003. She received her masters in human genetics at Sarah Lawrence College, and has been a practicing genetic counselor for over 20 years. Sharona is board certified through the American Board of Genetic Counseling and is an active member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors. She has given many talks on cancer genetics awareness, providing education and expertise to patients and their families as well as to the medical community. Her career focuses include hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndromes, hereditary colorectal cancers as well as many of the more rare cancer predisposition syndromes. She is involved in expanding and developing innovations at Northwell Health Cancer Institute in order to address the immensely increasing demands for cancer genetic counseling. In addition to providing genetic counseling, she is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Cancer Genetics at LIU-Post University.

This forum, which is free and open to the public, will be held at Adelphi’s Alumni House, 154 Cambridge Avenue in Garden City. Reservations are required.
