Introduction to Using Therapeutic Journal Work in Your Clinical Practice


With Nancy Scherlong, LCSW-R, PTR, CJT, M-S


How many of us, well-meaning, have suggested to our clients they use a journal as part of the treatment process? Though many clients love to write and enjoy having an accessible blank page at any hour of the day, writing without structure, pacing or containment can sometimes be dysregulating, or even anti-therapeutic. In this two-hour didactic and experiential workshop, participants will have an introduction to what is called The Journal Ladder, designed by Journal Therapy pioneer Kay Adams, and begin the process of understanding how to craft writing interventions that are attuned to your clients and their present circumstance.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  1. Gain knowledge of journal therapy.
  2. Be able to identify and differentially apply at least 3 different techniques from the Journal Ladder.
  3. Understand the purpose of a reflection write in the field of journal therapy as a means to protect privacy and promote emotional regulation.

About the Speaker

Nancy S. Scherlong, LCSW-R, PTR, CJT, M-S

Nancy ScherlongNancy S. Scherlong, LCSW-R, PTR, CJT, M-S is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the states of NY and CT. She is also a Registered Poetry/Biblio Therapist, Certified Journal Therapist and an approved trainer in both methods. She is the current co-president for the International Federation of Biblio-Poetry Therapy (IFBPT), one of the six expressive arts credentialing organizations. Nancy is a writer and an integrative psychotherapist specializing in stress management, trauma and addiction and has worked in the field of therapeutic writing for over 25 years. She provides workshops as well as distance coaching, consultation and training services. An Adelphi alum (1997) and adjunct faculty since 2008, she also provides online campus advising for Columbia University and is a member of core faculty of the Therapeutic Writing Institute and on the training staff of Kint Institute. You will receive a unique Zoom Video Conferencing link that will provide you entry into the workshop one day prior to the event. This link will be active approximately a half-hour prior to the start of the event.

Successful completion for the award of approved continuing education credits requires attendance at entire training/workshop and submission of a completed evaluation form.

New York State Office of the Professions (NYSED) regulations require that participants must be present for the entire approved educational activity in order to receive a certificate for continuing education hours. There is no accommodation in the State regulations for late arrival, late return from lunch or breaks, or early departure. According to NYSED, in order to award social work CEs; “When you offer a multi-day or multi-part course/educational activity, the learner must complete all parts in order to earn the certificate for contact hours, in the same way that a student must complete a semester-long course to receive college credit. You may not award partial credit for a program, even a one-day program, if the learner does not complete all requirements at that time.”


Cancellation Policy

Unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds for cancellations made seven working days or fewer before the event for any reason—or for no-shows.  We can provide credit towards a future workshop up to 24 hours before the event. After that, no credit will be issued.
