The high school student press has a vital role to play as a forum for school news and discussion. And, yet, student journalists face all types of challenges from school administrators, local school boards, and even the courts themselves, in their effort to create a more open press.
Just what are the limits of the student press, and are they necessary? Should we be fostering a more independent student press, or are there serious concerns related to such independence?
At Press Day, on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, we will examine these questions, and the complicated relationship that exists among the student press, the schools and the larger community.
The highlight of the event is the presentation of the Quill Awards, featuring 15 categories: Best Photograph, Best Illustration or Cartoon, Best Layout, Best One-Page Layout, Best Sports Story or Column, Best Arts Review, Best Opinion Piece, Best Editorial, Best Feature Article, Best News Article, Best Online Newspaper, Best Online Writing, Best Freelance Work, Most Outstanding Reporter and Most Outstanding Newspaper.
