Supervision Presentation:
Robert Mendelsohn, Ph.D., ABPP, Professor, the Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology, and Faculty Member, Postgraduate Programs, Adelphi University.

Dr. Mendelsohn is the author of the book A Three-Factor Model of Couples Therapy (Lexington Books/Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, 2017). Couple psychotherapy extends the work of the psychodynamic psychotherapist to the patient’s most significant committed adult relationship, yet the therapy is difficult both conceptually and technically. One major reason for this difficulty is that in every couple’s treatment there are several transference and countertransference relationships, a confusing array of psychological defenses, as well as regressive and nonregressive couple object relations (as distinct from the object relations that each individual member brings to the couple). Further, many of these processes are occurring outside consciousness, as well as at the same time.

In this presentation, Dr. Mendelsohn will supervise postdoctoral psychology fellow Chris Lowe, Psy.D., in his work with a couple. He will also describe how to work effectively and psychodynamically with the couple and demonstrate how the clinician can integrate couples work into his or her practice.
