Setting Goals Personally and Professionally

Goal setting is a very powerful strategy for personal and professional success, yet its importance is often neglected. Having goals in life can be very important for various reasons, one of the most important one is that goals help us to become motivated. This interactive workshop will enable participants to understand the importance of establishing goals and the tools needed to develop their own personal and professional goals.

Kathleen Flynn-Bisson

Kathleen Flynn-BissonM.A., MCHES, is a health educator with a master’s degree in Community Health and has completed coursework in the area of Substance Abuse. She has an extensive background in the areas of health and human relations. She is a Master Certified Health Education Specialist.

She is currently an adjunct professor in Adelphi University’s Health Studies department, the Suffolk Community College Chemical Dependency department, and the Stony Brook University graduate program in Public Health.

She developed an educational theatre company—KFBPTA, Inc.—in 2009 that has successfully reached many young adults for over five years. The company produced a creative, powerful and entertaining live production called Stories of Substance. SOS transformed real stories into an engaging performance. The show was developed and performed by young adults. The goal of the performance was to give a voice to the voiceless, encouraging audiences to make healthy choices for themselves and the others in their lives.

Kathleen is actively involved in her school district serving on many committees as well as facilitating a theatre bullying prevention program, the SOS Club at the West Babylon Junior High School. She is also a New York State DASA certified Train the Trainer.

She is currently sharing her educational theatre tools teaching the course Self-Discovery Through Theatre for Clubhouse of Suffolk County.  The course is part of the Riverhead-based Synergy Center. Their mission is to assist people who are affected by mental illness to lead healthy, productive and satisfying lives. She also teaches similar classes at the Seafield Center of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment.

Kathleen is also a Public Health Educator for the Suffolk County Department of Health Learning to be Tobacco Free programming. As well as an ERC—Emergency Room Companion—for VIBS (Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk County).  She is on call to assist victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault.

The Leadership Certificate Program is an interdepartmental initiative hosted by the Center for Career and Professional Development, the Center for Student Involvement, the Office of Alumni Relations and the Robert B. Willumstad School of Business.

Its goal is to offer Adelphi undergraduate and graduate students opportunities to develop leadership and professional skills. Participants are able to attend workshops on a wide variety of topics during the course of the year. 

Requirements for Students

To participate in the Leadership Certificate Program, you must RSVP for a minimum of six events. Each student must complete the workshops within the academic year. Events are added throughout the year.
