The Science of How Addictive Substances Effect the Teen Brain

with Dr. Stephen Dewey, Ph.D.

This is an opportunity to hear Dr. Stephen Dewey, research professor in the School of Psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine encore presentation (he received rave reviews in December 2018 workshop) offer a thoroughly captivating and comprehensible analysis of the disease of addiction. Addiction is a disease where regionally-specific neurochemical changes underlie its development and progression. In addition, these changes are thought to produce cravings – often associated with both acute and chronic symptoms of withdrawal. While addictive substances and behaviors produce unique changes in these specific chemicals, the degree to which they do so depends on the substance and behaviors abused. This presentation will identify these neurochemical changes and demonstrate alterations that develop as a function of the addictive substance.

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Attendees will learn about the specific neurochemical changes that occur in addiction.
  2. Attendees will better understand the use of brain imaging strategies to visualize this disease.
  3. Attendees will learn about the impact of environmental cues on relapse to drug seeking behavior.

About the Speakers

Dr. Stephen Dewey, Ph.D. is a Research Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at NYU School of Medicine.  He is also the Director of Research Education at Seafield Center.  Dr. Dewey received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.  He completed his postdoctoral fellowship in the Neurology Department at Stony Brook University. During his 24-year tenure at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Dr. Dewey conducted research on the effects of addictive drugs on the human brain. These studies led to the development of an effective treatment for addiction. In 2009, Dr. Dewey moved his research efforts to the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. Dr. Dewey started an outreach program in 1994 bringing his research findings to school districts throughout Long Island and the tri-state area. His informative message has reached hundreds of thousands of school-age children, parents, teachers, administrators, and counselors. “Dr. Dewey’s message is science-based, objective, and delivered with a sense of urgency, compassion and caring that commands attention,” stated former LICADD Executive Director, Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds. Recently, Dr. Dewey accepted an appointment to the Suffolk County Board of Health where he hopes to continue his education efforts in the fight against drug abuse. Additionally, in 2015 he was appointed Director of Research Education at Seafield Center. Dr. Dewey’s research has been featured on 20/20, Dateline, Good Morning America, ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, CNN, FOX News, News 12 Long Island, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Newsday.

New York State Office of the Professions (NYSED) regulations require that participants must be present for the entire approved educational activity in order to receive a certificate for continuing education hours. There is no accommodation in the State regulations for late arrival, late return from lunch or breaks, or early departure. According to NYSED, in order to award social work CEs; “When you offer a multi-day or multi-part course/educational activity, the learner must complete all parts in order to earn the certificate for contact hours, in the same way that a student must complete a semester-long course to receive college credit. You may not award partial credit for a program, even a one-day program, if the learner does not complete all requirements at that time.”

Cancellation Policy

Unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds for cancellations made seven working days or fewer before the event for any reason—or for no-shows.  We can provide credit towards a future workshop up to 24 hours before the event. After that, no credit will be issued.
